Blood Rage, Elegance and Brutality Wrapped Up In A Beautiful Package

Blood Rage is my all time favorite game. While my collection is ever evolving, my top 10 games have generally remained fairly constant, with few changes, and my number one spot hasn't changed since I first played Blood Rage in early 2016.

Dudes on a map and interactive euros are my two favorite genres, with some of my favorite games including Inis, Food Chain Magnate, Cyclades, Terraforming Mars, Brass and of course Blood Rage. To that end Hybrid Euros/Ameritrash tend to occupy the top slots in my top 10, with Blood Rage topping the list. Card drafting is my favorite mechanic of all time, and drafting cards in order to slaughter your opponent, while passing him the cards to ensure your own destruction, has an incredible satisfaction that no other game mechanic gives me.

Blood Rage is simple, the game plays over 3 ages, in each age you draft 6 cards that include upgrades, quests, and combat modifiers. Then the players go around taking actions sequentially until they run out of rage (the action point currency) or all areas are successfully pillaged. After 3 ages, the player with the most glory wins the game.

It's weird to say this, but Blood Rage is a classic point salad design. Everything you do can earn you glory. Complete a quest? Glory. Win a battle? Glory. Level up your stats? Glory. Lose your guys (as Loki)? Glory. Dying in Ragnarok? Glory. The style of play you choose to pursue is up to you, and the cards you pass to your opponents are up to you, and the ways you believe are most optimal when pursuing glory are up to you....and every game will play out differently.

Blood Rage is my favorite board game. It combines elegance and brutality, and wraps it up in a beautiful package with gorgeous art and stunning miniatures. I can't wait to play it again.
