Fog of Love

I went back and forth on what game to pick for this week, and there have been a lot. A great game of Flash Point: Fire Rescue with my youngest boys, My Little Scythe with the whole family, Captains of Industry and Blue Lagoon at game night, and Barenpark and Notre Dame Saturday afternoon. In the end I went with Fog of Love, a game I played with my wife Sunday night and am letting it go.

For those who don't know, Fog of Love is a 2 player game, ideally for couples but not exclusively, that aims to be a rom-com in a board game.I read the rules and was super excited to play, but in the end it fell flat. I think the review that summed it up best for me, from user adamxt on BoardGameGeek was this "Ultimately we either had to approach it mathematically (and completely lose the story) or thematically (and completely lose the game). That's sort of the point, but we found it frustrating"
.
My wife and I are strategic gamers, we love heavy strategy as well as light fun, but we can't get behind storydriven at the expense of gameplay. T.I.M.E. Stories fell flat, Tales of Arabian Nights fell flat, Arkham, Eldritch and Mansions fell flat. We so badly want to love a game with story, but so far that's only happened in small doses, such as the mini narratives in Rise of Moloch, or the slow storyline uncovering in Deep Madness. I want to eventually get 7th Continent and Tainted Grail, but I'm concerned that they won't be my cup of tea. These are great games, Fog of Love is a great game...I just want them to be great games for us too.

When you complain about wanting to like more games because the hundreds you don't play enough anyways isn't good enough....I often feel like being a board game addict is the very definition of #firstworldproblems. There are too many Kickstarters to back, I don't play my board games enough, I can't remember which Dixit expansions I already own....Here's wishing that all our problems in the coming year remain stupid, and that we all play more games.
