I briefly mentioned Space Base in an earlier blog post about Valeria Card Kingdoms, After a second play of Space Base, while enjoyable, I have no desire to give it a third try.
Space Base is yet another in the line of Catan, Machi Koro, etc. Ultimately these games boil down to rolling dice, while building a strategy around the game and of course crossing your fingers and begging the dice to roll your way. Every time I've played this formula I've enjoyed it, but so far only two have stayed in my collection. Catan, due to it's familiarity with enough people that I want to be able to pull it out if someone wants to play, and then Valeria Card Kingdoms, my personal favorite iteration of the genre so far.
I want to like Space Base more. I'm not 100% sure why I don't. I think part of it is the art....not bad at first glance but then all very samey....I would never look at a card and think "Oh, I know that card", I would have to read it every time. Part of it might be the abilities....while a lot of them were basic and to the point, there was this charge storing mechanism that I felt added confusion that was not worth what it brought to the table. I did enjoy the Dominion-esque feel of choosing between an efficient system and clogging that system with victory points to win, and I did enjoy the overall tableau building. Overall Space Base for me has been a very mixed bag....even writing about it makes me simultaneously want to play it again and not play it again...I'm not sure which will prevail.
There is an expansion out...and it's narrative based which I tend to enjoy...perhaps that will be the trigger for deciding...who knows.
