Mage Knight Board Game, Oh Adventuring We Will Go

It's going to keep being positive for another week or two, I have a backlog of great games I've been playing recently that I haven't yet gone on about, and for today that game is Mage Knight Board Game.

I've been trying to get Mage Knight to the table for going on 5 years now, and finally played it for the first time on Saturday. The first few years it just sat on my shelf, finally when I got around to reading the rules, turned out my rulebook was missing pages. I printed out a copy but lost the momentum after getting halfway through the rules. After another year on my shelf I finally traded my copy away. After playing Spirit Island, and being a bit more open to heavy solo plays, I decided to get it back. My copy arrived last week, and I set up the game to play the intro scenario solo.

I loved it. I'm itching to get it to the table with others, while also being completely willing to play it solo should my game group leave me hanging one game night.  I can't believe I waited this long to finally play it.

The basic game is simple, you are a Mage Knight, wandering around the map, fighting bad guys, exploring ruins and dungeons, and perhaps occasionally battling other players (this is optional). In that process you'll level up, add cards to your deck, gain abilities that strengthen you, etc. The net result is you start the game feeling half competent and half impotent...but by the time you hit the endgame, you're ready to start slaying that fire breathing dragon feeling like a major bad-ass in the process.

Absolutely amazing experience, the rules can be a chore even with the pacing the initial scenario provides, but it's well worth the investment. This may very well climb to my top 10 within a matter of plays.
